Maze Studios

Maze Studios CIC (Community Interest Company) is an artist-led, not-for-profit organisation providing studio space and opportunities for artists and the local community. Maze Studios is run by a group of dedicated artists, all with a background in Ceramics, having studied Fine Art and Art & Design.

Maze Studios provides a creative space in which artists/makers are encouraged to develop their practise within a friendly and supportive environment.

Mission statement
We are a community interest company for aiding the facilitation of artist development as a stepping stone between formal training and personal artistic progression towards artist independence’.

Our aim
Maze Studios CIC is established to cultivate and promote the progression of publicly accessible facilities and access to education in contemporary visual art, craft and design through the development of artistic knowledge and public participation.

Artist interest in Maze Studios gravitates around the use of kilns, this central focus of the studios unlike other studios creates a challenging but unique set up. Providing a space in which access to ceramic equipment is available before the development of a viable practice that would necessitate and justify personal investment in kilns wheels and other essential equipment.

Studio Spaces
An incubation space, an opportunity for the focused development of personal artistic practices. A place for learning essential ceramic studio skills. A place to develop and aid in the progression towards eventual artistic independence. Providing a platform for artist interaction, creativity and knowledge sharing. A space for taking steps towards the development of personal practices within the art field.

Studio spaces are available for a year.

A year’s space rental enables Maze Studios to align with its directives as a CIC in providing access to equipment and facilities to those at the early stages of development. With artist awareness of this time period, it encourages those that have made progression to seek alternative means of supporting greater productivity levels and in turn frees up space for those entering the development process.

Tenancies are available for up to a year and will include quarterly assessments and an end of year reviewal, to identify each artists use of the studios and future studio eligibility, based on these assessments artists can apply for extended lease periods.

Maze Studios will be aiding in the development towards artists growth of ideas and ultimately the step towards independence but does not house businesses.

Maze Studios is not able to support artists that are already in the process of product making having identified a product range and are looking to create, repeat produce for the sole purpose of selling.

The studios are not in support of continued production of set styles or ranges of work.

We are very much about progression and artist development towards professionalism. The focus of our space is to enable steps towards this. Maze Studios is not able to support artists that are already in the process of product making having identified a product range and are looking to create, repeat produce for the purpose of selling. In progression we are however happy for work that is made to be sold as this is a beneficial part of artistic development and experience. Our aim is to facilitate the steps towards professionalism and eventual studio independence. Helping artists develop and identify how they can achieve and support future growth is a key part of artist time at the studios.

Our studio space sizes are similar to what you might expect from those provided by University or colleges and are reflective of this stage of development as a space for learning and the experimental stage of artistic development.

Studio spaces are for independent use. In order to hold a studio space you will need to have had some prior experiences in ceramic practice, either through our ceramic classes, Day Spaces or through other formal training through college, university, night classes, art foundation courses or through self directed practice.

A Creative Space

  • A creative environment - A space that is alive with creativity.

  • Bath Potters run - A monthly collection from Bath Potters supplies of tools and materials is a convenient way of accessing materials and equipment for our full time tenants.

  • Learning about and developing essential studio practice - Through inductions independent use of the space can be achieved and a greater knowledge of ceramic practice.

  • Creative interaction between artists - A space of sharing creative knowledge.

  • Encouragement for progression towards artist independence - Through self directed experience and knowledge building artists can be encouraged towards identifying and achieving their next step.

Kilns and firings
Unfortunately we don’t have the luxury of brand new kilns, allot of our kilns come from colleges, universities that no longer have ceramic facilities. Each kiln is different.

This is also a reason we are not geared to facilitate businesses or a level of professionalism that requires a need for greater consistency in the accuracy of firings for the focused selling of work.

Maze Studios places importance on the equality of the allocated use of space and its facilities. In order to maintain an equal use of the facilities there is an 8 weekly firing allowance for all artists.
